Emotional support is one of the biggest gifts that we can give someone. It provides people the reassurance they need in times of trouble and sends a message of love and belonging. Read on to find out what emotional support entails and how you can express it or benefit from it.
Social support is a powerful mechanism that helps people overcome the times of turmoil and problems they’re facing by having a network of loved ones who can step in and give them much-needed comfort. The four types of support art emotional, instrumental, informational, and appraisal. Before we delve into the first one, let’s see what the others stand for.
Instrumental support means someone is willing to give the person in distress tangible aid and to put their best foot forward (like when you take care of a friend’s kid if they’re dealing with divorce). Informational, on the other hand, means that someone can provide you with all the info they know that can shed light on the problem and help you by raising awareness. Finally, appraisal signifies that family or friends will be there to validate all of your positive traits, like those that make you capable of overcoming a challenge.
This broad notion denotes the ability to show kindness, empathy, love, and compassion and thus make someone feel better in their own skin. This kind of remedy comes from different sources and can have varying manifestations, such as verbal expressions or physical gestures.
Emotional support comes from all imaginable and unimaginable sources, so there’s no point in trying to narrow it down to one definition. It can be anything from spiritual guidance to spending quality time with your pet. Rather than dissecting the term, take a look at what examples you can relate to or learn from.
Rather than giving specific examples, we’ll tackle categories that are illustrative of supportive behaviors. What you can do is:

As a woman of color, it was extremely important to me to find someone who understood my day to day life experiences. I not only found that with WOC Therapy, but specifically with Tamika. I found an educated, kind, understanding, and incredibly helpful therapist who has been by my side during one of the most significant changes in my life.
I am truly grateful for WOC Therapy and Tamika Lewis! Thank you!!!
Tamika took me on as a client at the height of the pandemic. I knew that I needed more emotional balance with the unforeseen events of the pandemic, racial unrest movement, and a very eventful political campaign. I knew talking to a woman who looked liked me would help with carrying the load of 2020 and going forward. I had no clue how bad it would get but the only thing that pulled me through was knowing that I would be able to release so many emotions on a biweekly basis. I knew I needed someone that could see me when I couldn’t see myself and help guide my through what felt like a never ending emotional rollercoaster. I am so grateful for Tamika and all that she does to be in support of black women by helping to keep us mentally balanced and emotionally aware! She has a way of holding me accountable of my thoughts and feelings that I appreciate so much. So grateful for finding Dr. Tamika Lewis!
